Young, who helmed some of the best films in the OO7 series (DR. NO, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, THUNDERBALL), was born June 20th, 1915. He died on September 7th, 1994 at age 79.




Besides his Bond hits, Young worked successfully in a variety genres for 40 years in the British, international and U.S. film industry.

He directed  thrillers (WAIT UNTIL DARK with Audrey Hepburn & Alan Arkin & THE JIGSAW MAN with Michael Caine), westerns (RED SUN with Charles Bronson & Ursula Andress), romances (MAYERLING with Omar Shariff & Catherine Deneuve), true crime (THE VALACHI PAPERS with Bronson), action-adventure (TRIPLE CROSS with Christopher Plummer & ZARAK with Victor Mature), tear jerkers (THE CHRISTMAS TREE with William Holden), musicals (BLACK TIGHTS with Cyd Charisse),  and comedies (THE AMOROUS ADVENTURES OF MOLL FLANDERS with Kim Novak).

Young was born in Shanghai, China on June 20th, 1915. His father was the Police Commissioner of the Shanghai Municipal Police.

He was a tank commander in the Irish Guards during WWII.  He participated in Operation Market Garden in Arnhem. Cornelius Ryan told the ill-fated story of OMG in his book A Bridge Too Far, which was turned into an all-star cast film in 1977.




Young's first job in the film business was as a screenwriter on the 1941 film DANGEROUS MOONLIGHT. He made his directorial debut in 1948 with the mystery CORRIDOR OF MIRRORS.

His other credits as writer/director include: STORM OVER THE NILE, ON APPROVAL, VALLEY OF THE EAGLES, TANK FORCE, POPPIES ARE ALSO FLOWERS, THAT LADY, SAFARI, PLAYGIRL AFTER DARK, ACTION OF THE TIGER, THE DIRTY GAME, THE ROVER, COLD SWEAT, THE KLANSMAN, JACKPOT, INCHON, SIDNEY SHELDON'S BLOODLINE, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, and more.






Did you know...?

Young directed the film version of the novel THE JIGSAW MAN, which was written by his first wife, Dorothea Bennett, 

Word is he supposedly turned down the chance to direct FOR YOUR EYES ONLY & NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN.

Young and a cameraman were in a helicopter that crashed into sea during the filming of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. They were trapped for some time in the helicopter's canopy before being rescued by several crew members. 30 minutes later Young was back to work, with arm in sling.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE is the last film JFK watched.
